2 Taking pictures and videos

Changing picture-taking settings

You can change settings to get best results from your camera. (Some settings are unavailable in some modes.)

  1. In any picture taking mode, press the Menu button.

  2. Press to highlight the setting you wish to change, then press the OK button.

  3. Choose an option, then press the OK button.

    • Press or the Menu button to exit.

    • Press , to return to the previous screen, and press the Menu button to exit.

Setting Icon Options

Self Timer

Create a 10-second delay before the picture or video is taken.

ON or OFF (default)For details, see Putting yourself in the picture.Unavailable in Burst mode.

Digital Zoom

Choose how digital zoom is employed.This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.

CONTINUOUS - no pause between optical and digital zoom.

PAUSE (default) - after reaching the limit of optical zoom, the zoom button must be released, then activated again to begin digital zoom.

NONE - digital zoom is disabled

Burst

Take up to 4 pictures in quick succession (approximately 3 fps).This setting remains until you change the mode.

ON or OFF (default)

  1. Press the Shutter button halfway and hold to set the exposure, focus, and white balance.

    The exposure, focus and white balance set by pressing the button halfway are applied to all the pictures taken in succession.

  2. Press the Shutter button completely down to take the picture.

    Stops taking pictures when the Shutter button is released, when 4 pictures are taken, or when storage space is full.

Flash and Self-Timer are disabled in Burst.

Unavailable in Night Landscape, Night Portrait, Candle Light, and Video mode.

Picture Size

Choose number of pixels for recording.This setting remains until you change it.

5.0MP (default) - 2592 x 1944 pixels. Ideal for printing on A3 or smaller size sheet of paper.

NOTE: When the orientation sensor converts a picture in 5.0MP, the dimensions are 1920 x 2550 pixels.

4.5MP (3:2) - 2592 x 1728 pixels. Ideal for printing on A4 or smaller size sheet of paper.

4.0MP - 2288 x 1712 pixels. Ideal for printing on A4 or smaller size sheet of paper.

3.1MP - 2048 x 1536 pixels. Ideal for printing on A4 or smaller size sheet of paper.

1.2MP - 1280 x 960 pixels. Ideal for printing on postcard or smaller size sheet of paper.

VGA - 640 x 480 pixels. Ideal for e-mail attachments or pictures placed on web pages.

QVGA 240 x 320 - 240 x 320 pixels. Ideal for sending to cell phones.

Scene Customizing

Choose a scene mode to be used in custom mode.

None (default), Portrait, Sport, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Snow, Beach, Text, Flower, Museum, Nagashidori (Panning Shot), TV Screen, Candle light, Sunset, Auction.

White Balance

Choose your lighting condition.This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera. *

AUTO (default) - automatically corrects white balance. Ideal for general picture-taking.

WEAK AUTO - without adjusting the white balance, retains the color makeup of the light source and creates pictures with atmosphere (available only in Custom mode).

DAYLIGHT - for taking pictures under bright sunlight.

OPEN SHADE - (available only in Custom mode) for taking pictures in shadows.

FLUORESCENT - prevents the picture from being greenish under fluorescent lighting. Ideal for indoor pictures under fluorescent lighting without flash.

TUNGSTEN - prevents the picture from being reddish under household light bulbs. Ideal for indoor pictures under tungsten or halogen lighting without flash.

MANUAL (M) - set the white balance manually (available only in Custom mode).

Color Mode

Choose color tones.This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

High Color - for taking pictures with highly saturated, vivid colors.

NATURAL COLOR (default) - for normal color pictures.

LOW COLOR - for taking pictures with subdued colors.

BLACK & WHITE - for black-and-white pictures.

SEPIA - for taking pictures in sepia.

EasyShare software also lets you change a color picture to black-and-white or sepia using a comoputer.

Unavailable in Video mode.

ISO Speed

Choose the ISO sensitivity.This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

AUTO (default), ISO 64, ISO 100, ISO 200 (standard picture quality)

Choose a high ISO setting for dark scenes, when you want to eliminate hand movement or take pictures without the flash.

Raising the ISO level increases digital noise in the picture.

Unavailable in Video, Auto, and Scene modes.

Sharpness

Adjust how much to define the outline of the subject in the picture.This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

HIGH - boldly defines the subject's outline. Use this to take sharp pictures.

NORMAL (default) - defines the subject with a standard level of outline definition.

LOW - tones down the outline definition of the subject. Use this to produce soft pictures of people, etc.

Unavailable in Video, Auto, Scene modes.

Focus Zone

Select the zone that the camera focuses on.This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

MULTI-ZONE (default) - from three zones, the camera selects the best one to focus on.

CENTER-ZONE - evaluates the small area centered in the camera screen.

Unavailable in Video, Auto, and Scene modes.

Exposure Metering

Select the method to evaluate lighting conditions in order to achieve the proper exposure.

This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

MULTI-PATTERN (default) - evaluates the lighting conditions throughout the camera screen to set the optimum exposure.

CENTER-WEIGHT - evaluates the lighting evenly for the whole picture, with an emphasis placed on the center of the camera screen.

CENTER-SPOT - only evaluates the lighting conditions of the center section of the camera screen.

Unavailable in Video, Auto, and Scene modes.

Latitude

By adjusting the contrast, you can achieve more realistic pictures under certain lighting conditions.

This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.

Shadows - use for scenery with heavy shadows. Improves the gradation of darkened areas, but may intensify highlights under some lighting conditions.

Normal (default) - ideal for standard lighting.

Highlights - use for scenery with bright highlights. Improves the gradation of highlighted areas, but may intensify shadows under some lighting conditions.

Unavailable in Video, Aut o, and Scene modes.

Flash Strength Control

Select the brightness of the flash.This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

–1.0, –0.7, –0.3, 0.0 (default), +0.3, +0.7, +1.0, Max Power

At Max Power, the flash is fired at full strength with no compensation for the pre-flash.

Unavailable in Video, Auto, and Scene modes.

AF Control

Choose auto-focus method.

This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.

CONTINUOUS AF - When picture taking is enabled, the focus is continuously adjusted.

SINGLE AF (default) - Correct focus is obtained once when the Shutter button is pressed halfway down.

Unavailable in Auto and Scene modes.

Exposure Compensation

Choose how much light enters the camera.

This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

For Custom mode - 0.0 (default), 0.3, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3, 1.7, 2.0

For Auto mode - 0.0, 1.0, 2.0

When the majority of the subject is white, positive compensation prevents the white areas from turning out gray. When the majority of the subject is black, use negative compensation.In backlit situations when you are not using the flash, positive compensation prevents faces from coming out dark.

Set Left Right Button

Set the functions to be used with .This setting remains until you change modes or turn off the camera.*

Exposure Compensation (default), Flash Strength Control, WHITE BALANCE, ISO SPEED, LATITUDE

Only available in Custom mode.

Image Storage

Choose a storage location for pictures and videos.This setting remains until you change it.

AUTO... (default) - the camera uses the card if one is in the camera. If not, the camera uses internal memory.

INTERNAL MEMORY... - the camera always uses internal memory, even if a card is installed.

Set Album

Choose Album names.

Pre-select album names before you take pictures or videos. Then, all the pictures or videos you take are tagged with those album names. See Picture and video album settings.

Video Quality

Choose number of pixels for recording.This setting remains until you change it.

VGA (default) - video is recorded in a 640 x 480 pixel window.

QVGA - video is recorded in a 320 x 240 pixel window.

Available only in Video mode.

Sound Recording

Choose whether you record sound with the videos.

ON or OFF (default)

Available only in Video mode.

Image Stabilizer

Choose whether camera stabilization is on or off while recording videos.

ON (default) or OFF

Available only in Video mode.

Video Length

Choose video duration.

CONTINUOUS (default) - as long as there is room on the card or internal memory.

5, 15, or 30 SECONDS.

Available only in Video mode.

Time Lapse Capture

Record a continuous video of a series of pictures taken with a time delay between each picture.

This setting is cleared when you end Time Lapse Capture mode.

OFF (default) - Turn the Time Lapse Capture mode off.

ON - Use the Time Lapse Capture mode as you would record a video.
