4 Doing more with your camera

Using P/M modes

  1. Turn the Mode dial to .

  2. Press to display P/M mode descriptions.

  3. Press the OK button to choose a P/M mode.

Use this mode For

Program

Controlling exposure compensation (how much light enters the camera) and flash compensation. The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture (f-stop) based on the scene lighting. Program mode offers the ease of auto shooting with full access to all menu options. Use the joystick to select settings. (See Changing P/M mode settings.) Press the Menu button to change other settings.

Manual

The highest level of creative control. You set the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO speed. Exposure compensation acts as an exposure meter, recommending the proper combination of aperture and shutter speed to produce an acceptable exposure. Use the joystick to select settings. (See Changing P/M mode settings.) Press the Menu button to change other settings. To prevent camera shake, use a tripod for slow shutter speeds.

Changing P/M mode settings

P/M modes control the f-number, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. Use the Menu button to control all other settings.


  1. Turn the Mode dial to P/M.

The mode options are displayed.

  2. Move the joystick to choose P or M.

  3. Press to:

  • Move between available settings.

  • Open a setting.

  • Change the setting.

  4. Press the Menu button to change other settings (see Changing picture-taking settings).

  5. Take a picture.

Settings apply only in P/M

Settings you change in P or M modes apply only to pictures taken in P/M modes.

For example, if you change the Color Mode to Sepia while in P or M mode, then Auto & Scene modes retain the default setting of Color.

NOTE: The settings, including Flash, are maintained for P/M modes—even when you change modes or turn off the camera.
